Detailed instructions with examples

On average, it takes 5-10 seconds to read one resume. Not so much. Therefore, it is important to make a good impression right away. An autobiography of your experience is a personal presentation designed to show your best side and “sell” you as a specialist to an employer. Therefore, your task is to make sure that every point on your resume attracts attention.

The right resume - where to start?

Before you start writing your resume, it's helpful to know what HR professionals, recruiters, and employers look for in candidates' resumes.

Description of key points in the resume

1. Provide your full name and contact information.

This section is very simple. Do not use your work email for communication. Enter your personal email or create a separate one for your job search. Check that the letter matches the format of the surname moc.niamod%40eman so that the employer does not write, for example, fluffy qiqun.

Include professional links such as Facebook or LinkedIn in your contact information. If you indicate a personal profile, carefully check what is written there to avoid inconvenient situations.

2. Describe your work experience.

Start with your current or most recent job. Indicate the title of the position, the direction of your activity and briefly describe your functionality and main tasks. List your key achievements and be sure to support them with reasons and arguments. Remember to only describe experiences and accomplishments that are relevant to the job you are applying for. If you have no experience, then it is better to focus on your skills.

Example of a "Work Experience" section in a resume

XYZ Company, City, Country.
February 2020 - January 2024

● Managed successful web application development projects resulting in a 30% increase in user volume over the last two years.
● Implemented data security strategies that resulted in a 40% reduction in web application vulnerabilities.
● Provided training and mentoring to junior team members, resulting in increased productivity and a 25% reduction in code errors.

When describing your experience, indicate only what you can “sell” you. Also, be concise and don't include too much unnecessary information.

3.Indicate your education

Describe your education as it relates to your job and career goals. Include basic education as well as any additional education such as vocational courses or training. If your major is not relevant to the position you are applying for, briefly explain why you changed your career path.

Example of the “Education” section.

Master of Information Technology
University named after Ivan Franko, City, Country
September 2014 - June 2016
Additionally:
● Web Application Development Course
Online platform "Web development courses"
December 2022 – January 2023
● Data Analysis with Python Course
Online platform "DataCamp"
May 2021 - July 2021
● Project management training
Courses "Project management for beginners"
August 2020 – September 2020
I have goals for global development, critical thinking, independence and other qualities that could be valuable to my career.

4. Share additional knowledge and skills

This section should be approached more responsibly and carefully. List the essential qualifications and skills required for the position for which you are applying. This includes what software you work with and what languages you speak.

It would also be a good idea to mention your interests and hobbies. This will help the employer understand who you are and how you might fit into the team. The key point: it should be something unique, and not “I read books and listen to music in my free time.”

Example of an "additional information and skills" section in a resume

● Programming languages: Python, JavaScript, SQL
● Frameworks and libraries: React.js, Node.js, Django, Flask
● Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB
● Data analysis: Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, Scikit-learn
● Web development: HTML5, CSS3, Bootstrap, RESTful API
● Version control: Git, GitHub
● Project management: Scrum, Agile, Jira
● Languages: Fluent in Ukrainian and English
● Personal hobbies: active participant in hackathons and technical communities. I love learning new technologies and solving complex problems. I prefer an active lifestyle and play sports in my free time. I have been running for 5 years now and have participated in all-Ukrainian runs.

5. Write a Summary

After filling out the main sections, write a Summary. Place this paragraph slightly below your contact information. It answers the question why you should be invited for an interview and what is the purpose of reviewing your resume. The goal is to grab the employer/recruiter's attention by immediately highlighting your professional goals, experience, knowledge and personal qualities. If you don't make it clear how you can benefit the company, you're doomed to fail.

Example of a "Summary" section in a resume:

Summary
A talented and highly qualified programmer with more than five years of experience in developing web applications. I have deep knowledge of Python, JavaScript and web technologies such as React and Node.js. Experience with relational and non-relational databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB. I have excellent analytical and problem-oriented skills that allow me to quickly solve problems and provide quality solutions. Dedicated and motivated, always ready to take on challenges and learn new technologies.

What to Avoid When Writing a Resume.

1.Spelling errors and typos

No one is immune to mistakes, but mistakes can seriously ruin your experience. Therefore: a) carefully read your resume several times from beginning to end; b) use a spell checker; c) ask a friend to check your resume for errors.

2.Waste of precious space

The maximum length of a resume is two pages; one page is even better. To save space, you may not indicate your marital status, age, address, and contact details of previous places of work.

3.Focus on achievements rather than responsibilities

How capable you are of completing the task assigned to you can be inferred from your achievements. Therefore, it is better to write down what you actually did and what led to it, rather than what you should have done.

4.Lie.

The truth will always come out, so no lie deserves your reputation. In some cases, you may exaggerate the truth a little, but it is better to be honest with yourself and others.

5.Using templates to create a resume

According to a CareerBuilder survey, ⅓ of employers believe that using an online resume is a mistake. Therefore, a personalized and sufficiently detailed resume can show you at your best.
